CANON CITY - Hampton Court Block of the Month
European history is always fascinating. Those PBS offerings of Tudor history are the best! Did you know that the original Tudor Hampton Court Palace was begun by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Henry VIII’s Lord Chancellor in the early 16th century who started Hampton Court Palace’s transformation from an ordinary country house to a magnificent palace? It soon attracted the attention of Henry VIII, who so admired it that Cardinal Wolsey gave it to the King as a gift, and Henry brought all his six wives here (not all at once, though). Surrounded by gorgeous gardens and famous features such as the Maze and the Great Vine, the palace has been the setting for many nationally important events.
When William III and Mary II (1689-1702) took the throne in 1689, they commissioned Sir Christopher Wren to build an elegant new baroque palace. Later, Georgian kings and princes occupied the splendid interiors. When the royals left in 1737, impoverished 'grace and favour' aristocrats moved in.
Queen Victoria opened the palace to the public in 1838. It has remained a magnet for millions of visitors, drawn to the grandeur, the ghosts and the fabulous art collection.
And now YOU have the opportunity to take this very special Block of the Month Class and indulge in a bit of the Hampton Court Splendor!
This project would be perfect as a wall hanging, baby quilt or table topper at the 35" x 35" original size, or you could make it 4 x 4 and create a wonderful 70" x 70" quilt for your bed!
The first block is paper pieced, so you can bring your sewing machine and create that block as a class on November 8th or you can pick up the pattern and work at home. Each month you have the option of sewing here, or getting the pattern and instructions and working on your own.
