CANON CITY - Free Motion Quilting with Templates with Irene Huffman

Free Motion Quilting with Templates using
Westalee Templates for Free Motion Quilting on a Domestic Machine
Presented by Irene Huffman, Jazz Cat Designs

This is a beginning/intermediate level free motion quilting class to explore Westalee’s ruler foot and templates.  The class is hands-on, so you’ll have a chance to use your new templates and practice some really fun techniques.  Be sure to bring all your questions, too!

The instructor will provide a kit for the table topper project. Fabrics and colors will vary depending on the scraps available in the instructor’s current stash!!

You will need to provide some practice fabric as described below.

CLASS OBJECTIVES

  • Review Westalee’s foot and templates including some practice (about 2 hours)
  • Introduce Westalee’s Sashlee Line Works template (about 3 hours), which is so helpful for:
    • Stitching in the ditch
    • Stitching evenly spaced straight lines
    • Joining quilted pieces using an amazing quilt-as-you-go technique.
  • We will explore the use of the Sashlee template, along with the 2” simple circle, Spin-E-Fex #4 and Circles on Quilts Spinning Wheel #36 to work on a small table topper.

  • A kit will be provided for the table topper.

BASIC SKILLS NEEDED FOR THIS CLASS

  • You will enjoy this class most if you’ve had some free motion experience, but we’ll be touching on the basics during class.
  • Be familiar with your sewing machine.
  • Know how to wind and change a bobbin.
  • Know how to thread your machine and install your bobbin.
  • Know how to drop your feed dogs.
  • Know how to adjust your machine’s tension for free motion.  Very important.

FABRICS AND BATTING

  • Fabric:  1/2 yard of a solid color cotton fabric.
  • Batting: Suggest using bamboo, cotton, or 80/20 poly-cotton.    Fluffy polyester batting seems to be harder to work with when you’re learning.

FABRIC PREPARATION BEFORE CLASS

  • Leave the fabric folded as is comes off the bolt.  One side will be the front and one side will be the back.
  • You’ll have a piece to practice on that is about 18” long by about 20” wide.
  • Layer top, batting and backing.
  • Secure layers using your favorite method.  Recommend fusible batting, basting spray, or hand basting to secure layers.  This is easier to handle than safety pins when using templates.

 WESTALEE SUPPLIES

  • Westalee ruler foot.  The Westalee foot must fit the machine you are using:  high shank, high shank special, low shank, or mid shank.  They are NOT interchangeable.
  • NOTE:  If you have a Bernina machine, you will most likely need a #77 adapter which is available from your Bernina dealer.
  • Westalee templates:  12” arc (packaged with ruler foot) .
  • Sampler Template Set #1 which includes Spin-E-Fex #4, 2” Circle, Circles on Quilts #36, 6” Spiral, Clamshell, and 4” Arc.
  • Sashlee Line Works Template
  • Westalee Sashlee Line Works Template
  • Westalee Free Motion Glider (or similar product) to cover your machine bed.
  • Westalee Cross-Hair Square  (optional, but really helpful).

GENERAL SUPPLIES:

  • Sewing machine and accessories; your sewing machine manual
    • NOTE:  your machine must be in good working order – we’re not able to make repairs during classes.
  • Please put a new needle in your machine before class.  Suggest a 90/14 quilting needle or a 90/14 sharp needle.  Bring extra needles with you.
  • Thread for quilting.  Please wind a bobbin with your chosen thread before class.  Good quality, 40 or 50 weight thread, either cotton or polyester will give good results. Suggest using a color lighter or  darker than your fabric so you are able to easily see your work.
  • Quilting gloves.
  • Forceps or long tweezers for pulling bobbin thread to the top of your piece.
  • Marking pen or pencil for marking your practice piece.  Please test this beforehand to make sure you can see it on your fabric and that it can be removed from  your chosen fabric easily.
  • 24” long quilting ruler.
  • Small scissors.
